Contextual Statement

This was an assignment for my course about LGBTQ history that I took my freshman year of college. We had to draft a proposal for a specific nonprofit, and I used the likeness of the nonprofit I currently volunteer with: Keshet. My proposal was a monthly webinar for ages 18-24 to learn about terminology, self-expression, and community advocacy. We had to utilize data, prior experience, and much research about a detailed action plan proposal- including information we had learned throughout the class about queer theory and various readings by relevant parties. I created it using information I had gathered and wrote it from the perspective of myself as a Youth Leader in the organization, to the nonprofit itself as an idea for advancement.

This showcases another important aspect of professional writing, which is proposals to organizational institutions. This shows how well I collect and research statistics, as well as implement them in proposal writing in a way that flows. It is also another example of project building and planning, as I had to create an idea to present to the nonprofit and lay it out in a way that is appealing to leadership. My experience with queer theory, a variety of literature, and proper citation methods is emphasized by this assignment. The proposal format illustrates my ability to write to and from different audiences, create relevant tone that captivates the intended audience, and is most useful in enacting change in my community.

Reflection

This taught me a lot about nonprofit proposal writing and how that can apply to my career, as I want to work with Keshet in the future full-time. I was also able to implement a lot of sources regarding queer politics and identity terminology, which helped me practice more research.
