Kendal’s Portfolio Home

I grew up a quiet kid, preferring to observe and listen to my peers. I was an avid reader, and I loved to write and learn. I loved spending time with my little brother, and trying to learn about how he saw the world, and how I could be a mentor to him. I knew in early high school that I wanted to go into the psychology field. I enjoyed classes in psychology, sociology, literature, and photography.

My first job I was exposed to was my mother being a special education teacher, and I immediately grew an interest for working with children. I saw how little support my mother was getting, and how she couldn’t do all she wanted to for the students. I want to help kids with developmental/intellectual disabilities, and hopefully contribute positively to children’s mental health. Regardless, I knew I wanted to get experience working with children. I started tutoring, babysitting, and dog-sitting in middle school, and got my first “real” job in high school.

I grew a love of social work and giving back to communities around me. I began volunteering in early high school, and I continue to work with one of these organizations to this day. I originally got involved with said organization to find community, as during the height of COVID-19 I felt alone and not supported. This relates to my personal identities, and continues to be a motive for me to delve more into developmental psychology as a future profession. This portfolio delves into my skills with writing, project creation, research, and more. I’ve heard the phrase, “leave the world better than when you found it,” but I discovered at an early age that I can’t help everyone. Instead, I decided my purpose in life is to put more good into the world than bad, and help people in whatever capacity I can.
