Contextual Statement
This project was an essay I wrote for counseling psychology in my junior year of college. The instructions were to use a psychological approach of our choice to analyze a character from a piece of media. I chose Carol from the TV show, The Walking Dead, and the feminist theory approach. Feminism as a whole has a lot of relevance in the nonprofit sector, as many organizations are based in activism and social justice, so being able to use it as a counseling method helped me connect those two interests of mine, as well as my interest of writing. The assignment was to delve into the characters past and create a treatment plan based on the analysis done throughout the paper.
This assignment showcases more of my skills in the psychology sector, as well as professionalism in the field of analysis- and even diagnosis. As a psychology major, assignments like these can show my range of skills and how they coincide with my future professional life. It also gives a great example of how I can think outside the box, as the treatment plan I put in place wasn’t based in talk therapy, and the feminist approach itself is difficult to utilize adequately when finding relevant treatment plans. This shows that I’m not afraid to try something new, and go a difficult route if I feel it could showcase my creativity and expertise best.
Reflection
It taught me about analyzing, research, citations, and how to help specific people with specific problems. This essay outlines how I believe my interests in writing, psychology, and social justice coincide with one another.
